פרופ׳ שלום בן שימול הוא רופא ילדים ומומחה למחלות זיהומיות ביחידה למחלות זיהומיות בילדים במרכז הרפואי האוניברסיטאי סורוקה, ופרופסור חבר קליני בפקולטה למדעי הבריאות באוניברסיטת בן־גוריון בנגב. סורוקה הוא בית החולים היחיד באזור שלם, וזו אינה עובדה מנהלית בלבד: כל ילד בנגב שחולה במחלה זיהומית קשה מגיע לכאן. מכאן שאפשר למדוד לא רק את החולה שלפניך, אלא אוכלוסייה שלמה — לפני הכנסת חיסון ואחריה.
הוא סיים את בית הספר לרפואה בבאר שבע ב־2002, התמחה ברפואת ילדים בסורוקה, שימש שם רופא בכיר מ־2009, והשלים ב־2012 התמחות־על במחלות זיהומיות. מ־2017 מרצה בכיר באוניברסיטת בן־גוריון. עבודתו — לצד קבוצת המחקר של באר שבע — היא אחד המקורות הנצטטים בעולם לשאלה מה קורה למחלות פנוימוקוקיות כשמדינה מכניסה חיסון מצומד לשגרה.

Prof. Shalom Ben-Shimol is a pediatrician and infectious disease specialist at the Pediatric Infectious Disease Unit of Soroka University Medical Center, and Clinical Associate Professor at Ben-Gurion University of the Negev. Soroka is the only hospital serving an entire region, and that is not merely an administrative fact: every child in the Negev with serious infectious disease arrives here. Which means one can measure not only the patient in front of you, but a whole population — before a vaccine is introduced, and after.
He graduated from the Medical School of Beer-Sheva in 2002, specialized in pediatrics at Soroka, served there as a senior pediatrician from 2009, and completed his infectious diseases fellowship in 2012. Senior lecturer at Ben-Gurion University since 2017. His work — with the Beer-Sheva research group — is among the world’s most-cited evidence on what happens to pneumococcal disease when a country adds a conjugate vaccine to its national schedule.
Alongside this, under a name of his own, he writes. Seven books so far: popular science on parasites and on vaccines, a memoir of becoming a doctor, two medical thrillers, and a volume of notes on 1970s classic rock.

In 2003–2004, as a young pediatric resident, he spent his days at the limit of his ability — and his nights writing about Stevie Nicks and Arik Einstein on a rock forum. A thousand semi-coherent pages became, twenty years later, a book.
